What is the role of character evidence in a criminal trial?

Character evidence is a testament of the defendant’s character (morals, habits, reputation, etc.). In the trial, this often has little influence because it creates unfair prejudice in the jury. There is one of three ways character evidence can be used; when the defendant introduces it to support their credibility, when the prosecution introduces it to destroy the defendant’s credibility, or when it’s used to destroy a witness’s credibility.
