How can a business address allegations of discrimination or harassment?

Discrimination happens when an employer treats an employee or a job applicant unfairly because of their race, religion, colour, sex, age etc. So businesses must really handle these types of allegations carefully by ensuring compliance with federal and state law while maintaining a fair and safe workplace.

There are some steps key that can help business to address allegations of discrimination or harassment:

  • Set up clear policies: Anti-discrimination & anti-harassment policies are crucial from the outset of the employees relationship, to ensure proper training and notice are established with the employee. Ensure that employees understand reporting procedures and consequences.
  • Comply to federal laws such a Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and state specific regulations. Also, cooperate with regulatory agencies like the EEOC if a formal complaint is filed.
