How can I protect my film’s script during the pitching process?

There are many actions you can take during the pitching process to protect your film’s script and to protect from the infringement of your rights,

  • Copyright the script

Although you automatically own the copyright to your script the moment you write it, registering it at the U.S. Copyright Office gives you a public record of your ownership of the copyright and adds another layer of protection.

  • Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs)

How can I protect my film’s script during the pitching process?

Prior to pitching your film’s script, you may wish to have all parties sign an NDA prior to your presentation. An NDA is a legally binding document that ensures that all who sign cannot speak of or use your script without permission.

  • Limit distribution

Prior to distribution, make sure to only selectively share your script only with people whose knowledge of it is required, as unnecessary dissemination of the script could lead to unwanted leaks.
